About the IDP
Who is the IDP for?
The IDP is for anyone interested in undertaking an industry-based PhD qualification with a view to working in industry after graduation. You could be an employee of the partnering industry organisation, or someone interested in a specific industry sector.
Note: If your current employer has a complex problem they’d like to address, they can partner with UTS and turn that problem into your PhD research project. In this case, you will continue to receive a salary rather than a scholarship.
Development for IDP students
UTS has developed a tailored support program specifically for IDP students. The Industry Researcher Development Program (IRDP) provides knowledge and skills to effectively create, plan, negotiate outcomes and deliver on industry projects. The commitment is approximately six days per year.
To be considered as an IDP candidate, you must meet the admission requirements for a standard UTS PhD in the relevant student category (domestic or international).
Before applying for the IDP, you should meet with potential academic supervisors in the faculty or research centre most closely aligned with your project. You should also identify a partnering industry organisation in which your PhD project can be based.
Once you’ve completed these steps, you can then contact GRS for advice on facilitating the IDP process.
